Functional Branding Meets Everyday Utility with 3D Printed Clips
The Client
An independent snack brand based in the East Midlands reached out to Protomolecule Ltd with a simple yet clever request: custom-branded bag clips to use as part of their product packaging and as promotional giveaways at food fairs.
They wanted something practical, reusable, and brand-aligned—a functional product that would stay in customers’ hands long after the snacks were gone.
The Challenge
The client had a clear idea of what they wanted:
- A clip that actually works well (strong enough to reseal bags, easy to use)
- Custom logo or slogan embossed or engraved on the side
- Material that’s durable but light for packing and shipping
- A design suitable for batch production in the dozens or hundreds
- Eye-catching color options to match seasonal promotions
The Solution
We began with several prototype iterations, experimenting with different hinge designs and clip pressures to get the right functionality. After client approval, we moved into low-volume batch production.
Final features included:
- Spring-tension clip with a built-in thumb tab
- Logo embossed into the top panel
- Printed in PLA and PETG for strength and color variety
- Available in custom color runs for limited editions
- Packaged in eco-friendly kraft paper sleeves with branding
The Results
- First run: 200 custom bag clips for event giveaways
- Used in packaging for limited-run snack packs
- Helped boost brand retention with a functional product
- Now an ongoing product included in subscription boxes and DTC orders
