Precision 3D Printing for Remote Control Vehicle Components
The Client
An RC hobbyist and small online seller approached Protomolecule Ltd with a need for custom replacement and upgrade parts for RC cars and drones. These components had to match factory specs, withstand real-world use, and in some cases, improve on the original design for performance or durability.
This project included both one-off custom requests and batch orders for popular aftermarket upgrades.
The Challenge
RC parts have unique requirements:
- Tight tolerances and accurate fit with other components
- Durable enough to withstand vibration, impact, and weather
- Lightweight without sacrificing strength
- Consistent dimensions across small batches
- Compatibility with various vehicle models and setups
The client provided reference parts, dimensions, and in some cases STL files that needed refinement for printability.
The Solution
We collaborated to identify the best materials and printing methods for each part type:
- FDM was used for robust, structural parts like suspension arms and mounts
- Resin was used for smaller, high-detail pieces like LED housings and cosmetic shells
- Each model was optimized for print orientation, strength, and surface quality
- Test prints were measured and fine-tuned to ensure accuracy
- Repeatable settings were saved for ongoing batch orders
Parts were delivered individually or in kits, labeled and ready to sell through the client’s online shop.

- 30+ custom and replacement parts printed
- Consistent quality achieved for small-batch production
- Reduced cost vs. injection moulding or CNC options
- Improved performance reported for modified designs
- Now an ongoing collaboration with the client to develop new parts
