At Protomolecule, we regularly help clients recreate discontinued or hard-to-source parts, and this recent project is a great example of that process in action.
A client approached us looking to replace a set of 1980s JDM style wheel centre cap hubs that were no longer available to buy. Rather than settling for an incorrect substitute, they sent the original parts to us so we could work directly from them and create accurate replacements for their vehicle.
Using the original centre caps as reference, we were able to assess the form, fit and overall design of the parts, then replicate them for production. This is where our experience in 3D design and 3D scanning becomes especially valuable. When parts are obsolete, damaged, or simply unavailable, we can often use an existing component as the starting point for a reverse engineering process that allows it to be recreated.
For vehicle owners, this can be especially useful. Many older or specialist cars have trim pieces, brackets, covers, mounts and finishing parts that are difficult or impossible to source off the shelf. By reverse engineering an original part, we can help reproduce components for restoration projects, repairs, custom builds, or replacements where the manufacturer no longer supplies them.
In this case, the final parts were produced in ASA, which was chosen because it is well suited to automotive use. ASA offers strong durability, excellent weather resistance, and improved UV stability, making it a sensible material for parts that need to withstand outdoor exposure, changing temperatures, and general road wear and tear.
After production, the client had the parts painted to complete the finish and help them blend in with the rest of the vehicle.
This project highlights how reverse engineering can provide a practical route to reproducing vehicle parts that would otherwise be extremely difficult to replace. Whether it is a centre cap, trim piece, cover, bracket or another discontinued component, working from an original sample often allows us to develop a production-ready replacement.
