Functional Decor Meets Unique 3D Printed Design
The Client
A boutique florist and homeware retailer approached Protomolecule Ltd with a request for a custom 3D printed flower vase to accompany a new line of seasonal arrangements. The aim was to create a signature vase that stood out from typical glass or ceramic options—lightweight, elegant, and fully customisable, suitable for display and delivery.
The Challenge
The vase needed to meet several key criteria:
- A visually striking silhouette to complement floral compositions
- Watertight or insert-compatible to handle fresh flowers
- Durable enough for daily use or gift delivery
- Customisable surface options (textures, logos, or colour variations)
- Compatible with small-batch production and low unit costs
The client also wanted an alternative to fragile glass that could ship safely with minimal packaging.
The Solution
We designed a tall, gently twisting vase with a flared mouth to support loose floral stems. Key features included:
- Printed in matte PLA and PETG for texture and stability
- Offered with and without a transparent inner insert
- Customisable pattern variants including ripple, lattice, and minimalist vertical flutes
- Optional branding subtly embossed on the underside
- Lightweight enough for shipping in protective envelopes
After finalising the shape and testing several finishes, we moved into batch production for the launch.
The Results
- Initial run of 50 vases delivered within two weeks
- Used in local deliveries, gift sets, and in-store displays
- Customers praised the unique design and surprising durability
- Design expanded to include matching mini bud vases
- Client now restocks seasonally with limited edition colours
